The University of Greenwich is a British university located in the London Borough of Greenwich, London, England. The University traces its roots to 1890, when Britain’s second polytechnic was opened near the Thames at Woolwich to teach practical and commercial skills to London workers. An innovator from the start, the polytechnic pioneered the country’s first part-time day-release (part time courses once a week during the day) and sandwich courses (courses with an extra year of work experience).
Over the years a range of specialist organisations have joined the institution, giving it diverse strengths in subjects such as teacher training, architecture, engineering and history. The name Thames Polytechnic was adopted in 1970. University of Greenwich was awarded the University status in 1992.
The University of Greenwich offers the best of worlds - city and country. Students have both the convenience of being located close to London, with the cream of Kent - rolling hills, seaside resorts and historic sites - not far away.
The University won the Queen's Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education in 2008. It also has links with further education colleges in the Thames Gateway area, including Bexley College and North West Kent College, and plays a regional role in training teachers, nurses and social care professionals. It also houses research and consultancy in architecture, landscape architecture, employment relations, fire safety, natural resources, social network analysis, education, training, educational leadership and public services. The University of Greenwich has established research partnerships with the European Space Agency and the large pharmaceutical companies.
