30 Years of Education Excellence

1st August 2007 - Since 1977, SEGi Group of Colleges have provided recognised education which have earned them a mark of quality in the private education. SEGi College currently serves about 14,500 students through its 6 major campuses located in the Kota Damansara, Kuala Lumpur, Subang Jaya, Petaling Jaya, Penang and Sarawak. “Having been established for 30 years is a hallmark in the education industry, what more, the nation. For 30 years we have seen many challenges and changes, and yet, we have always stood by our principles of providing affordable and quality education for all,” said Hew Moi Lan, Vice President (Operations) of SEG International Bhd and Principal of SEGi College Kuala Lumpur. To strengthen its claim to quality, the Group has produced 300 First Class Honours graduates of outstanding performances in the fields of engineering, business, accountancy, finance and computing. Hew, who has been working at SEGi Group of Colleges for 20 years, raising in ranks throughout her employment with the company, still has the passion for education burning in her. “As history tells, education is very important for all civilisations. At SEGi, we believe that education is not only a preparation for future living, it is a process of living. With this comes about what we call today Life Long Learning.”

“Throughout the years, we have always practiced continuous improvement in the development of education. We have research and practiced the best methods in education, try to provide sufficient facilities and equipment, find education partners that share our passion and beliefs, and now, we have improved our infrastructure with new and renovated campuses to create a better learning environment for students,” said Hew.

According to Hew, for the 30 years since establishment, SEGi has grown not only in numbers, but also in providing more variety of education programmes. “Starting out first in the field of business and accountancy, SEGi has grown steadily in providing programmes in the areas of engineering and information technology, creative arts and design, education and social sciences, nursing, hotel management and tourism, and American Degree Programs.”

To date, the Group has over 100 programmes, and in the pipeline are programmes health sciences and build environment. The Group is looking at having courses of the disciplines of bio-medicine, bio-technology, dentistry, pharmacy, quantity surveying, architecture, construction and project management.

According to Hew, in addition to its promise of quality and industry driven programmes, the Colleges have also incorporated the Career Exploratory Programme (CEP) and the SEGi Leadership Centre (CEP) to ensure that students are career-ready by the time they graduate.

“The practical skill trainings of Career Exploratory Programme and SEGi Leadership Centre are to nurture and inculcate the essential skills that we believe will be able to produce first class if not world class graduates, career ready to face the challenges of the real world once they graduate. These are among two of the many additional services we offer to furnish our students with the essential skills before they graduate,” Hew elaborated.

Hew added, “Although the qualification is a vital part of securing career advancements, one must know that there are other factors which contribute to a person's success. One such factor is our very own attitude and aptitude. Soft skills play an essential role to determining how far one goes without limiting to only career advancements. That is why, we at SEGi College take one step further in ensuring that students are guided not only academically but also in terms of building and developing personal traits, paramount to success with the added bonus of our training centre, SEGi Leadership Centre.”

SLC is an outdoor adventure learning centre, designed specifically to provide participants with a purpose-oriented education in an enjoyable, safe learning environment. The centre boasts facilities such as a 4-storey high rock climbing tower, twelve element high obstacle course, abseiling tower, flying fox, outdoor-designed accommodation, camping ground, seminar amenities and paintball battlefield. Students will stay in a purpose built outdoor designed accommodation. The outdoor experience is further enriched with rafting and canoeing facilities.

SEGi’s 3+0 degree programmes are the University of Abertay Dundee (UAD) – BA (Hons) Accountancy and Finance, BA (Hons) Marketing, BA (Hons) Business Administration; and University of Southern Queensland (USQ) – Bachelor of Business (Administrative Management), Bachelor of Business (Human Resource Management) and Bachelor of Business (Marketing). Students can also find out more about the BSc (Hons) Applied Business Computing, BEng. Mechanical Engineering and BEng. Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and BA (Hons) Business Management programmes offered in partnership with University of Sunderland (UOS), UK.

For those interested in 4+0 American Degree Programme, SEGi School of Graduate Studies offers the Bachelor of Science in Management, Psychology, Communication, Financial Management, Marketing or Management Information Systems.

SEGi also offers a vast range of degree programmes, through twinning arrangements with top-notch reputable and renowned universities, such as the University of Sheffield, UK, University of Abertay Dundee, University of Greenwich, University of Sunderland, University of Southern Queensland, and Upper Iowa University. 

All diplomas can be articulated into bachelor programme with partner universities. Successful diploma candidates can pursue the final part of the degree with their diplomas.

SEGi’s 3+0 degree programmes are diploma programmes are recognised and approved by the National Accreditation Board (LAN) and the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE).
