Spooktacular Party at SEGi College

Spooky Students! Having a frightfully good time during the Spooktacular Party!

8th December 2006 SEGi College Subang Jaya had its Spooktacular party in the college. A Halloween themed event, the party was organised by the students of the Faculty of American Degree Program (ADP). “In ADP, we believe that having fun and gaining knowledge can be done simultaneously,” said Vijay Ganesh, Business lecturer of the ADP at SEGi College of Graduate Studies, a member of SEGi Group of Colleges. The Spooktacular Party was organised by the students from the Marketing and Management class. Gaining knowledge is not only about reading books and doing exercise, but about getting practical experience as well. Students from the mentioned classes get to learn from selling tickets to managing the party.

The students organised a week of spooky Halloween theme activities such as horror movie marathon, a students auction of ‘slave for a day', and Spooktacular Party (a costume dress party). Dressing up in scary costumes of vampires, witches and so on, the ADP students had scores of other students lining up to buy tickets.

“ It is not just a party but it's a part of my students' assessment. They were assessed through selling the tickets, opening booth, organising and managing the whole event and doing performance in the party. It is also a way for them to apply what they have learned in class to the real world,” said Vijay.

Having a party as a teaching tool is definitely interesting. Students are very excited about the event. Take Hadi, an ADP student as an example, “I like the ‘Learning Outside The Classroom' concept. Not only did I learn book theories in classroom, but practical knowledge outside of classroom as well. It is something totally different from those boring classroom sessions. And in fact, I learned more!”

Another ADP student, Diana said she really enjoyed her class, especially the out of the norm way of “Learning Outside The Classroom” concept. “It makes my learning process interesting and I don't feel bored. I get to apply what I learned during classroom session to the real world. I guess this is the whole idea of effective learning.”

Students have to take part in different activities in different class in order for them to get marks for their examination.

“Besides, students have to contribute ideas in class. Class participation is a part of the assessment as well. We believe an effective learning process should be two ways. Listening to ideas from students is fun as you will be surprised by their creative ideas,” said Vijay.

The ADP feature of the Bachelor of Science degree is offered in partnership with Upper Iowa University (UIU). Students have the choice of 6 specialisations in the popular subject areas such as Management, Psychology, Communication, Financial Management, Management Information Systems, and Marketing.

The UIU ADP is recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education.

Upper Iowa University was established in 1857 and is the largest private university in Iowa . It is located in the city of Fayette in the scenic Volga River Valley of northeast Iowa . UIU is a liberal arts institution of higher learning offering quality baccalaureate degree programs.

The University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association. It is approved by the Louisiana Higher Education Board, the Wisconsin Educational Approval Board, and the Iowa Department of Education.

UIU is currently licensed by the Board of Regents in the State of Louisiana. Its programs are approved by the States of Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Texas and Wisconsin. It is also a member of the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA) and Council for Standards in Human Service Education (CSHSE).

In addition to the main campus in Fayette, Iowa, UIU has established off-campus centres in Singapore , Canada, Hong Kong and Malaysia.

In Malaysia, The Faculty of American Studies at SEGi College of Graduate Studies is an approved off-campus centre. SEGi College of Graduate Studies currently has its campus located at Subang Jaya.
