The prestigious University of Sheffield, UK, signed the Memorandum of Agreement today with SEGi Group to offer twinning programme in 3 engineering disciplines of Chemical, Electrical and Electronic, and Mechanical Engineering.

The twinning programme allows for students to study the Sheffield engineering degree 1st year at SEGi.

This momentous occasion was attended and witnessed by YB Datuk Ong Tee Keat, Deputy Minister of Higher Education Malaysia .

Signing the MOA were the Vice Chancellor of the University of Sheffield - Professor Robert Boucher and Dr. David Fletcher, Registrar. Representing SEGi are Dato' Clement Hii – Chief Executive Officer of SEG International Bhd and Lee Kok Cheng – Chief Operating Officer & Executive Director of SEG International Bhd and Principal of SEGi College Subang Jaya.

“It is our great pride and honour to partner the University of Sheffield in providing students in Malaysia with a chance to further their engineering through this twinning programme. I am sure this partnership will flourish and contribute to the engineering industry,” said Hii. “We are privileged to have in this ceremony the Vice Chancellor of the University himself to witness the event, an unquestionable gesture that we are serious about providing world class programmes to our local front.”

“This partnership signifies more than just a gateway to obtain a superior education from Sheffield, but a learning opportunity that the graduate will take with him/her for the rest of his life,” added Hii.

The pre-requisites of the twinning programme are with either A-levels or equivalent, or articulation with a SEGi engineering diploma. Acceptance into the SEGi diploma programme, students must have at least 5 credits in SPM.

The SEGi Diploma in Chemical Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering are recognised by the National Accreditation Board (LAN) and the Ministry of Higher Education.

In March this year, Sheffield and SEGi had signed a memorandum of understanding in recognition of its engineering diploma programmes to enter in to the engineering degree programme at Sheffield .

“SEGi has been offering engineering diploma programmes since the mid 1980s. We have had more than 200 engineering diploma graduates who have furthered their studies to international universities and have graduated with a first class honours degree,” said Hii.

The University of Sheffield has been named as one of the world's top universities in two separate global rankings published recently. In the annual academic ranking of the top 500 universities worldwide, published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Sheffield was ranked 69th in the world, whilst the US publication Newsweek ranked the University 70th in its global top 100 hundred listings. The University of Sheffield is rated 8th in the UK and 18th in Europe.

The University Guides confirm the University of Sheffield's position as one of UK's leading universities. The Virgin 2005 Alternative Guide to British Universities, for instance, says that “ Sheffield is a top university across the board”. According to The Times Good University Guide 2005, Sheffield University consistently ranks in the top 10 universities for Chemical, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. The University has also won numerous Queen's Anniversary Prizes in 2002, 2000 and 1998.

Teaching quality assessments rate Sheffield's teaching very highly across a wide range of subjects, and official research assessments confirm its reputation as a centre for world-class research in many disciplines.

The University has more than 25,000 students from 116 countries and almost 6,000 staff.

The University of Sheffield's research partners and clients for engineering include Boeing, Rolls Royce, Unilever, Boots, AstraZeneca, GSK, ICI, Slazenger, and many more prominent multinationals, as well as UK and overseas government agencies and charitable foundations.

“SEGi's passion in education is driven by industry-link universities and programmes. We are focused on providing our students with contemporary education that benefits them by making them career ready,” said Hii. “Therefore, we ensure that our partners also share this passion to be industry driven yet maintaining excellence in education.”

More than 200 SEGi engineering diploma graduates have achieved First Class Honours in their engineering degree with international universities. The alumni claim that their achievement is attributed to the College's strong foundation and diploma programme.
