2nd August 2006

SEGi College presented its inaugural batch of scholarship recipients at a simple ceremony at the theatre hall of its main campus. The 20 scholars who turned up represented their respective campuses in the Klang Valley at Kuala Lumpur , Petaling Jaya and Subang Jaya.

Cameras clicked away as proud parents, lecturers and friends applauded to support the scholars as they made their way up on stage to receive their awards from principals of their respective SEGi Colleges.

The scholars were commended for exemplary performance in academic as well as co-curricular activities. Among those who received the awards were recipients of the SEGi High Achievers' Award (HAS) that recognizes students who excelled in their SPM and STPM. Students must achieve at least 10As in their SPM in order to qualify for this prestigious award.

Others received their scholarships which were awarded in collaboration with SEGi College's media partners, namely 8TV and The Star.

Commending them on their achievements, Chief Operating Officer of SEGi College, Mr. Lee Kok Cheng said that “in receiving the scholarship, the students have not only been recognized for their exemplary achievements, but have made an important step to commit themselves to being a part of SEGi. As scholars, they are expected to exemplify the best in students.”

Students are not only awarded scholarships for strong academic performance. They need to excel in co-curricular activities as well. Noteworthy among the scholars were a State Athlete, Sridevan Subramaniam, as well as a well-known actor & entertainer, En. Mohd Aszerul Nizam – otherwise known as Beego.

The scholars are currently pursuing a number of diploma and degree programmes in disciplines such as business, accountancy, engineering, the creative arts and early childhood education.

In his speech, Lee added that students are encouraged to seize every possibility to widen their horizons and contribute to the people around them during their studies and beyond.

It is heartening to note that the scholars are already actively contributing to the College by representing the same in sports and academic competition. Others have taken the opportunity to establish leadership roles for themselves.

Take Sarah Tan Su Yin, a 18 year old lass from Subang Jaya, a 8TV scholar, is the Editor of the soon to be launched College magazine known as “Random” with her friends. Interestingly enough, scholarship recipients and friends, Alicia Mun and Caryn Yeo are also part of her editorial team. “We have to thank the College for giving us the platform to express ourselves as well as to hone our leadership skills”, Tan mentioned. An avid cheerleader, Tan has also started the College inaugural cheerleading team.

Top achiever and HAS scholar, Ms. Tan Yue Mei and her close friend and fellow HAS scholar, Dorothy Tan, both of whom are pursuing the 4+0 American Degree Programme (ADP) at SEGi, also credited the college for not only giving them the scholarship but also developed them into rounded individuals. They have recently organized a Fashion Show at the College to create awareness of the importance of dressing for the right occasion and at college.

These are part of SEGi's efforts to put in place programmes aimed at developing its students to maximize their learning and prepare them for eventual career in the industry. Lee advised the scholars that “internship within the college is not a chore.”

“Treat it has on-the-job training that will put you in good stead in the future. It will provide you the opportunity to observe and learn how businesses and colleges are managed and run” Lee added.

The college principals, Ms. Hew Moi Lan from the Kuala Lumpur branch and Mr. Ramesh Pathmanathan from Petaling Jaya also saluted the parents of the scholars for placing your trust on SEGi to play a part in the development of your children's future.

The scholars then took a scholars oath, before the event came to an end.
