SEGi College Penang is doing its part in providing secondary school students an insight in the working world. Two schools in Penang, SMJK Heng Ee and SMK Air Itam underwent a free workshop at SEGi College Penang to learn about information technology and culinary arts courses and what jobs they can eventually take up in the industries.
An interesting workshop on webpage design using the latest technology, Windows Vista, was conducted by lecturer, Patricia Wee. The 40 students from SMJK Heng Ee and the 80 students from SMK Air Itam attended the workshop.
“Some believe that web design has reached its peak, but in Malaysia, I believe there is still a great need for web designers as industries are becoming more globalised,” said Jeffrey Goh, Principal of SEGi College Penang.
“With Penang being the hub of multinational information technology and computing organizations, it is without a doubt that there is demand for web designers,” added Goh.
After the interesting presentation on web design, the students were treated to a flaming performance of flambé demonstration of cooking by Food & Beverage lecturer, Mr. Raj. This followed by a detailed demonstration of table setting.
“Culinary Arts is also another highly demanded programme here on the island. As a tourist destination, the hotel and tourism industry is always on the lookout of skilled and qualified H&T personnel,” said Goh.
According to Goh, the potential for H&T is endless. Opportunities for work are not limited as graduates can aim to work overseas in international hotel chains and restaurants.
“As a College that focuses on industry driven programmes, you can be assured that our lecturers and programme structure are based on what the industry needs,” said Goh. “We get our graduates career ready.”
After H&T presentation, the participants were awarded with certificate of attendance from the College.
SEGi College Penang offers the Diploma in Hotel Management as well as the Diploma in Tourism Management. The College also offers other diploma and 3+0 degree programmes in the area of Business and Accountancy, Information Technology, Early Childhood Education and Mass Communication.
