The Faculty of American Degree Program (ADP) had organised a psychology week which was filled with knowledge and fun.

“The purpose of organising the psychology week is to create awareness about psychology among youngsters in the college,” said Jason Raj, Psychology Lecturer of the American Degree Program at SEGi College of Graduate Studies, a member of SEGi Group of Colleges.

“There are many areas in Psychology that one could explore. Psychology is not only about psychological disorders, but personality, social behaviour, motivation, counselling and so on. The psychology week is to let people know about all these area related to the psychology field,” said Jason.

The activities held during the psychology week were organised by the students from the Industrial Psychology, Social Psychology, Evaluating Behavioural Research, Abnormal Psychology and Counselling Technique class. Different class contributed different activity during the psychology week.

“The activities held were a part of their assessment. Students are supposed to come out with activities that are related to their coursework and apply what they learned into the activities. This is the way to help students understand better about their courses,” said Jason.

Among the activities held were Personality Test, The SEGi Amazing Race, Movie Afternoon, sketches and talks.

“Our Industrial Psychology Class conducted a personality test, using a test designed by Florence and Maritaa Littauer. It basically categorises human personality into four areas and seeks to find out how dominant each category is for a particular individual. Participants are to choose numerous descriptions that describe them best, and then calculate the dominance of each category from there,” said Alex Woo, an ADP student who is currently pursuing his degree in Psychology and Communication.

Another ADP student, Ravin, a psychology major explained, “The SEGi Amazing Race is specially designed to help students understand the concept of how the society works. The SEGi Amazing Race involves having the participants to ask for 1 sen coins in our café and so on. It helps the participants understand the social behaviour of our society better.”

Besides personality test and The SEGi Amazing Race , the Abnormal Psychology Class had organised a sketch about a few psychological disorders. One could understand the symptoms of each psychological disorder as the students acted out the symptoms of each psychological disorder. The disorders that were acted out were schizophrenia, gender personality disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and split personality disorder.

“Acting out the symptom is the best way for students to understand the disorder. Not only that, the audiences who watched the show will definitely get the idea of what the disorders are about. Besides, watching movies is also a good idea to understand psychology. ‘Patch Adam' and ‘The Miracle Worker' can be used for students to understand psychology better,” explained Jason.

The Counselling Technique Class invited a professional counsellor, Petrina De Silva as the guest speaker to conduct a talk on counselling. She shared her experience in counselling her clients with the audience. Besides, she even had some small activities with the audiences. It was indeed a successful talk.
