Proud Moment For Family

What started as a bet turned up to be the most rewarding achievement for Sridevan.

Sridevan Subramaniam was the pride of his mum and dad as he walked up the stage to be only graduate for the year to be conferred a First Class Graduate in Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Accountancy and Finance from the University of Abertay Dundee (UAD). The 22 year-old also received the University Prize for best student studying full-time.

Ecstatic, Sridevan said, “I was determined to graduate First Class and worked hard towards proving that anyone can achieve First Class, regardless how steep a climb it is. So when the results were announced, I was expecting that I have done well.”

Sridevan was studying full-time when he pursued his BA (Hons) Accountancy and Finance. “I chose this programme from UAD because of the comprehensive content of the programme, which offers more than just accounting or finance. The UAD programme offers a blend of accounting, finance and other management subjects which is essential and beneficial to enhance one’s understanding and competency in the real working world,” he said.

“The programme delves on critical thinking and requires one to question the established principles and norms rather than blindly accepting it. The programme focussed more on decision makings instead of just memorising terms and facts and following it. Now that I am working, the programme proves to be very practicable and useful to climb the corporate ladder,” added Sridevan.

Currently working in one of the big four accounting firms as assurance associate (auditor), Sridevan comes from a family of 9. He is the fifth of seven siblings. After his form 5 examinations, Sridevan pursued the LCCI at SEGi College Kuala Lumpur, thereafter started SEGi’s Diploma in Accounting (DIA) in 2004 where he was awarded the Star Scholarship Fund. After diploma, Sridevan continued to study for the BA (Hons) Accounts and Finance from UAD under SEGi’s High Achievers Scholarship.

Commenting on his study habits, Sridevan laughed, “My study habits? There's none actually. When I was studying, I was playing competitive football for state and national youth teams, so I was juggling time between studies and football. My principle to excel was to never miss classes and to focus 100% when in the class. It is easier to comprehend the subject and do revisions when I pay full attention in class.”

“Of course, I could not have done this alone. Everyone who helped me to achieve this particularly my parents and family especially my sisters who provided financial and morale support, my girlfriend who was very helpful, my lecturers especially Mr Vicky, Mr Philip and Ms Devika who encouraged and motivated me to score. Last but not least, my friends and team mates who have stuck by me through thick and thin,” Sridevan said.

When asked about future plans, Sridevan confessed that he has already enrolled in an ACCA programme. “It is quite tricky to juggle both my career and studies at the same time. I am very thankful though that my employer is very supportive of my studies. I am sure it will not be a walk in the park, especially when I am working for a big four firm but I believe that given the commitment and focus, I can do it.”
