SEGi College, Malaysia recently organised a Barbecue Pool Party for its student residents. The soiree organised by the Student Council took place at the brightly decorated swimming pool, glittering with colourful fairy lights and bopping balloons along the walkway of the piazza.

Preparations for the party started as early as 12.00noon with members of the student council bustling about.

“We have been planning for this event for weeks. We were just waiting for the right time for a celebration and we figured that now is the best time as the students have just finished their examinations. Also, some of our students are new residents in the hostels, so this is sort of a welcome party for them,” said Ling, President of the Student Council.

Student residents started gathered at the pool area in the evening as the party began to take place were all smiling with exhilaration on their faces. It was obvious that students were anticipating and geared up for the event because some turned up at the party wearing nothing but their swimming suits.

As the day dawned into night, residents were treated to an evening of exciting games. Among games played were Captain Ball, Number Games and the ever popular Limbo Rock. Captain Ball is a classic game of water polo where students were divided into two teams to outscore one another.

The “Number Game” which requires the participants to react to a certain number received great response. Through the games students had to communicate and interact with each other which in turn allowed them to make new friends.

“Although we were short of attractive prizes for the games, the students were enthusiastic about joining in on the fun. It gives the council great joy to see everyone enjoying themselves at free will. I am happy that we were a part of this very rewarding event,” said Ling.

Besides the games, residents we able to satisfy their taste buds and savour an array of delicious and scrumptious food. The buffet table was lined with all sorts of varieties from local delicacies to western grilled delights. The favourite dish was the grilled chicken wings, served with the chef’s special sauce. Residents claimed that it was the best chicken wing they ever tasted.

“When I saw the notice about this Pool Party, I was very excited. Actually, I was anticipating for the event. This is a marvellous effort planned by the student council. What I love about it is the fact that everybody from the hostel gets to eat, swim, dance and just have plain fun together,” said Jenny, a Business Administration student.

After dinner, residents unwound and boogied down to hot tunes and disco beats echoing from the deejay’s booth. Some even gathered in groups

and sang along to the tunes of familiar hit songs such as Boyzone’s Everyday I Love You, Daniel Powter’s Bad Day, and even evergreen hits like A Song For You by the Carpenters.

“I am touched to see that students of all races mingle and cooperate with each other. Though from different classes and different origins the evening was just a harmonious event and I am sure it brought everyone closer to each other,” smiled Ling.
