Over 2000 prospective students, families and the public flocked to the SEGi College Open Day and Night last 7th July 2007. Held at the newly completed Romanesque flagship, the College in Kota Damansara opens its arms to receive visitors from the surrounding community as well as the locals from as far as Kajang.
“We would like to welcome all to our newly open college, for people to get a feel of world-class education facilities is all about,” said Lee Kok Cheng, Chief Operating Officer of SEG International Bhd and Principal of SEGi College, Malaysia.
The most popular day events were the sports activities such as the futsal face-off challenge, the High School Basketball League (HSBL) Finals, and the Junior Journalist Programme. Besides that, the bazaar that offered an array of food and products also drew in the crowd who were hunting for irresistible bargains. Visitors were also given an opportunity to tour the new campus and to enquiry of its programmes.
The crowd drew in at as early as 9.00 am with busses of students from secondary schools, who were also participants of a special guidance programme, the Junior Journalist Programme (JJP). The JJP is a smart collaboration between SEGi College and major media counterparts of The Sun, Nanyang Siang Pau, Doctorjob magazine, Education Quarterly magazine and local blogger, Kenny Sia. The JJP’s aim was to enlighten, inculcate and also guide secondary school students to better and more effective writing for publication, specifically their school magazines.
Visitors were taken on a campus tour of the surrounding facilities, the faculties, library and the sports complex which consists of a pool, squash court and many more. Most of them were overwhelmed with the vastness of greens and space, our on-campus accommodation, state-of-the-art learning facilities and recreational amenities.
Besides that, there was also an ongoing free dental check-up held at the Dentistry Faculty. Among the many who attended the check-up was Lee Kok Cheng, the Principal of SEGi College, Malaysia.
“This is a good chance for staff and students to practise their skills learnt in their classes as they have hands-on experiences with actual patients. At the same time they are contributing to the wellbeing of our very willing visitors,” said Lee.
In the sports front, the Futsal Face-Off challenge started at 10.30 am with participants from secondary school students and also the public. Held in two major categories, Secondary School category and College/Open category, the activity received overwhelming participation from some 200 enthusiastic participants, vying for the champion’s reward of brand new hand phones.
Emerging as champions in respective categories were Mohd. Sahzuan bin Ahmad for the Secondary School category, Archibong Gladstone Dan – a foreign student of SEGi College as the Men’s Champion for the College/Open Category and Nor Farhana Huda bt. Omar emerged as the Women’s Champion for the College/Open Category.
Thereafter, the much anticipated HSBL Finals commenced at the basketball court that witnessed the showdown in the semi-finals between SMK Sri Kembangan versus SMK Batu 8 and ultimately the finals of the championship between SMK Yu Hua and SMK Confucian.
The semi-final between SMK Sri Kembangan versus SMK Batu 8 witnessed a fierce competition between both teams. After an exciting match, SMK Seri Kembangan proved the stronger of the both emerging as winners, defeating SMK Batu 8 with a victory of 56 to 45.
The final match between SMK Yu Hua and SMK Confucian proved to be an uphill task for SMK Yu Hua. SMK Yu Hua showed tremendous effort and determination against the reputable, national junior basketball players of SMK Confucian. Though competed without their skipper, Loh Shee Fai the team demonstrated their dominance on court and emerged as the victor, nabbing the grand prize of RM150,000 scholarship from SEGi College and a championship trophy. SMK Confucian triumphed, scoring a landslide victory of 60 to 42 points.
There were many other activities held occupy the whole-day activity such as the 'hip-hop' dance performance, cheerleaders performance, paint ball arena, lucky draw, Reptile exhibition, Yoga classes and inflatable games specially catered for children.
The event ended with a big bang in a concert and gala performance in the evening with performances from pop and rock celebrities from 8TV. Among celebrity performances were the 10 Finalists from So You Think You Can Dance, Love Me Butch, Farah Ashikin, Junio Hustle, Dragon Red, Ferns and also SEGi ADP students One Buck Short plus a special performance by Radhi OAG.
The concert ended with a big bang fireworks show!
“Following the success of this open day, we are planning for more activities such as open days to forge good ties with the community and at the same time perform our bid to tell people the importance of tertiary education. It is also a satisfaction to be able to give back to the society by organising such an event,” enthused Lee.
