07th June 2007 - The Faculty of Nursing at SEGi College celebrated Nurses Day last month with the theme “Positive Practice Environment: Quality Workplace = Quality Patient Care”.

The theatre hall was a full house as fellow college-mates, lecturers and staff joined in the celebration where the nursing students gave performances of the zapin dance, singing, sketch and dikir barat. There were also testimonial speeches by selected nursing students.

“This is the first celebration for our nursing students as the programme started in mid last year. We hope to have this as an annual celebration for our students as it promotes a sense of unity for the nursing profession,” said Lu Poh Lian, Head of the Faculty of Nursing at SEGi College.

Cheers and sounds of joy filled the hall as the students demonstrated their talents. A highlight of the event was a cake cutting ceremony to celebrate Nurses Day.

Although a female dominated profession, the college has male nursing students as well. Mohd. Khairul Anuar b. Mustafa, 19 years old from Kuala Krai, is in the 2 nd semester of this programme.

“I am driven by passion to help others and that is why I chose nursing. It is a demanding profession and one that isn't easy. To be a professional nurse, one needs to have good judgment, compassion and intelligence,” said Mohd. Khairul Anuar. “It is a humble yet noble profession.”

Men in the nursing field in Asia still face a stigma from society today. However, to Mohd. Khairul Anuar, he takes this opinion as a challenge and a motivation.

“Male nurse is a norm, especially in developed countries in the west. I do not believe that nursing is a feminine profession as it is demanding and challenging both mentally and physically,” shared Mohd. Khairul Anuar, whom is not be deterred in his quest to be a nurse.

“There is a global shortage of qualified nurses. Finding a job should not be a problem as nurses are in high demand wherever they are,” added Mohd. Khairul Anuar.

“Nurses today are respected and stand on par with other professionals in the industry, taking on their roles and responsibilities as defenders, comforters, decision-makers, problem-solvers, researchers and health educators,” said Lu.

SEGi's Diploma in Nursing is recognised by the National Accreditation Board (LAN) and the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE). The programme is also accredited by the Ministry of Health and the Malaysian Nursing Board. Students who graduate with the diploma will register with the Board.

Candidates need to have SPM or O-Levels of 3 credits, proficient in English will be an advantage and be in good health (candidates need to pass the medical examination).

The nursing syllabuses are of three main areas; health sciences, behavioural sciences and nursing sciences.

“ SEGi College has invested heavily on ensuring that the nursing faculty facilities are modern and meets the highest standards set. We have simulation wards, skills laboratory, computer labs, multipurpose theatre, practical room, a well stocked library,” said Lu.

Nurses Day was celebrated successfully which ended deliciously as the students and guests were treated to a hi-tea session.
