The Nanyang Secondary School Quiz Competition 2007 and News Cutting Competition is an annual collaboration between SEGi College and Nanyang Siang Pau. The event is supported by the Ministry of Education Malaysia and United Chinese School Teachers Association of Malaysia.

“We are constantly involving ourselves in charitable and nation building activities as our commitment to contribute back to the society. We strongly believe that it is our social obligation as responsible corporate citizens to promote learning and to award talented students with scholarships to advance themselves,” said Lee Kok Cheng, Chief Operating Officer of SEG International Berhad and Principal of SEGi College, Malaysia.

“The year, SEGi College has pledged a total of RM 250,000 worth of cash prizes and scholarships to be awarded to winners in the competition,” Lee added.

The Grand Finals was held at SEGi College Malaysia in the presence of YB Yew Tiong Lok, Parliamentary Secretary of Ministry of Federal Territories who later presented the prizes to winners of the competition. Chia Seng, Chong Yee Cheun, Lim Kah Hoe and Yong Yi Ying of Chong Hwa Independent High School Kuala Lumpur nabbed the grand prize of RM 1,800 cash and RM60,000 worth of scholarship for their narrow victory over SM Chung Hwa Kluang.

Although they came in second place trailing with a mere 5 points, Kluang Chong Hwa did not go home empty handed. Lim Zhi Yong, Kow Yan Siong, Ong Chun Ping and Loo Yi Xin received a cash prize of RM1,200 and RM30,000 worth of scholarship.

Coming in third place was yet another team from Chong Hwa Independent High School Kuala Lumpur (Team A) who walked away with RM800 in cash and scholarship worth RM20,000.

The Nanyang Secondary School Quiz Competition is an all state national competition open to all secondary schools in Peninsular Malaysia. This year, a total of over 100 schools took part in the annual competition, with an overwhelming 814 teams altogether competing against each other for the championship title.

The competition which started in May this year saw teams trying their best to outshine the other but in the end the two teams Chong Hwa Independent High School and Kluang Chong Hwa proved too tough to beat. Nevertheless, participating schools were present to witness the two ‘Goliaths’ outwitting each other in the finals.

The event was truly an eye-opener and a great experience for the high school students and participants. Questions were derived from current local and global issues.

“The competition promotes awareness of current social and worldwide issues. We believe that secondary school students should also be aware of these current social and worldwide issues, other than lessons of arts and science they learn at school,” said Lee.

“Most questions asked in the competition are derived on current issues, which indirectly encourage students to inculcate the habit of reading newspapers or gaining information through the Internet. The most important message that we try to bring across is the importance of acquiring knowledge and implementing the knowledge learnt in our everyday lives,” Lee added.

Nanyang Secondary School Quiz Competition is an annual competition which gives great opportunity for students to develop their organisational skills and communication skills.
