42 creative arts students and 4 lecturers sought inspiration from local art and architecture during a field trip to Malacca , Malaysia 's historical state.

The excursion was organised for students of MSC International College , joined by students of PRIME College and Summit International College .

It was an enjoyable trip as the lecturers and students visited Youth Art Gallery , Jonker Street 's art galleries, antique shops, Cheng Hoon Teng temple and Kampung Hulu mosque. A Famosa, St. Paul 's hill, Royal palace, Dutch cemetery, St. Francis Xavier's church and the Melaka Butterfly Farm were also on the ‘places to visit' list.

“The College often organise trips such as this for students as extra-curricular educational trips promises a deeper impact on them,” said Daniel Loy, Head of Academic of MSC International College. “We organise trips with a focus on blending fun with learning.”

The students had a ‘back to our roots' exposure to arts and history of Malacca.

The trip expose the students to local artists who have opened numerous galleries in the heart of Malacca town, and gained first hand look at the evolution of Malaysia's art history from pre-colonial influences to modern styling through architecture, visits to museums, and monuments that are unique to the state.

“We want the students to appreciate our history and hope of instil and develop a unique localised art style in them. We want them to appreciate the beauty of our local art of all origins – Peranakan, Malay, Chinese, Indian, Portuguese and so on,” said Loy. “Our history since the spice trade has enriched the art and architecture of our country.”

This is opposed to the students in focusing on purely modern art and design perspective that is usually preferred today, adds Loy.

There was a fun while educational atmosphere during the trip.

“We believe this will help us in our future projects of fusing traditional and modern aspects in our art,” said a student.

A trip to Malacca would not be complete without feasting on the local delicacies and flavours that makes Malaysia a food haven. The students were treated to the famous Malacca chicken rice balls, satay celup , ice koci and so on.

“It's certainly a feast for the eyes as well as the palate,” laughed the students.
