SEGi College Subang Jaya Music lecturer, Yii Kah Hoe, is one of the four finalists of Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) Forum for Malaysian Composers 2, Phase II!

The forum organised by the MPO is a way to seek new music and talent within the country. A selection process has been made since early this year, drawing down to the four finalists.

Kevin Field, director of the MPO Forum was quoted as saying, “The standard of entries was exceptionally high this year and with the candidates being selected solely on the content and quality of their music alone, the decision process was a lengthy one. This is a major opportunity for all four composers to develop their individual voices and through their individual experiences, write something unique for the Malaysian music scene and, potentially, the orchestral repertoire worldwide.”

Yii's masterpiece, “A” Note Promenade , captured the attention of the forum that won him a place in the final four.

“It is a piece inspired by gamelan music. “A” Note Promenade is based on the note “A” and its overtones. An introduction that built around tuning fork solo in “A Note Promenade” represents the starting of “A” note progresses to different harmonic partial. It always grows and changes,” explains Yii.

”I am very excited about this competition. And I have put in a lot of efforts. The different elements that I put in “A” Note Promenade made it very different and interesting,” said Yii, with aspirations of winning the MPO forum to compete at international level.

Sharing his love for music as a lecturer at SEGi since 2000, Yii said, “I enjoyed the teaching environment here, and my students are a priority with me.”

Yii's interest and passion in music is obvious with his active participation in many local and international performances. Among concerts and activities that he participated were “Konsert 100”, rainforest world music festival, Taiwan Traditional art Festival , Taiwan International Composition Contest for Chinese Orchestra and of course Malaysian Composers 2, Phase II.

Graduating with a Diploma in Fine Arts in 1991 at a local institution, Yii furthered his education in Musicology. After 3 years of hard work, he obtained a Bachelor Degree of Music from Xi'an Conservatory of Music, China.

Apart from dizi performances and theoretical studies, Mr. Yii is also an active composer who likes to have a lot of different elements of music in his pieces. He likes to mix the western music element into his Chinese music composition, and he is famous for his mixed pieces.
