Sheffield Offers Engineering with SEGi

29th March 2006 The University of Sheffield, UK and SEGi College Subang Jaya (formerly known as PRIME College USJ) signed a memorandum of understanding today to offer Engineering degree programmes in Malaysia. Representing Sheffield is Tim Crick - Director of International Liaison, and for SEGi College is Lee Kok Cheng – Chief Operating Officer of SEG International Bhd and Principal of SEGi College Subang Jaya. The MOU is to recognise SEGi's existing engineering diploma qualifications for articulation into Sheffield 's second year of the engineering degree programmes. The engineering degree offered by Sheffield in partnership with SEGi College is the B Eng (Hons) Chemical Engineering, B Eng (Hons) Electrical Engineering and B Eng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering. “The University of Sheffield only partners with those who have the hallmarks of quality. SEGi College is a choice as it meets this expectation,” said Crick.

“SEGi has been offering engineering diploma programmes since the mid 1980s. We have had more than 200 engineering diploma graduates who have furthered their studies to international universities and have graduated with a first class honours degree,” said Lee.

“Our alumni's achievement reflects the quality of the engineering programme we offer. Our facilities are constantly upgraded to match those of international universities and our lecturers are well qualified and experienced in their respective engineering discipline,” added Lee.

The College offers the Diploma in Chemical Engineering, Diploma in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and Diploma in Civil Engineering. The diploma programmes are recognised by LAN (Lembaga Akreditasi Negara) and MOHE (Ministry of Higher Education).

“It is our great pride and honour to partner the University of Sheffield in providing students in Malaysia with a chance to further their engineering studies to degree level. I am sure this partnership will flourish and contribute to the engineering industry,” said Lee.

The University of Sheffield is rated 8th in the UK and 18th in Europe , and has moved up four places to 65th in the world in an annual academic ranking of the top 500 universities worldwide published in August 2005.

The University Guides confirm the University of Sheffield 's position as one of UK 's leading universities. The Virgin 2005 Alternative Guide to British Universities, for instance, says that “ Sheffield is a top university across the board”. According to The Times Good University Guide 2005, Sheffield University consistently ranks in the top 10 universities for Chemical, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. The University has also won numerous Queen's Anniversary Prizes in 2002, 2000 and 1998.

Teaching quality assessments rate Sheffield 's teaching very highly across a wide range of subjects, and official research assessments confirm its reputation as a centre for world-class research in many disciplines.

The University has more than 25,000 students from 116 countries and almost 6,000 staff.

More than 200 SEGi College engineering diploma graduates have achieved First Class Honours in their engineering degree with international universities. The alumni claim that their achievement is attributed to the College's strong foundation and diploma programme.

“We have an average of 10 students graduating with First Class Honours in engineering each year. Just last year, our former student and HAS scholarship recipient, Kuberan Anandarajah, successfully completed his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Loughborough University , UK ,” added Lee.

The entry requirement into the engineering diploma programme is a minimum of 5 credits in the SPM examination or equivalent.
