Children of the orphanage Rumah KIDS in Klang were all smiles as they were provided with two of the latest Acer computers from SEG International Bhd (SEGi), parent company of Systematic and PRIME Education Group.

Lee Kok Cheng, Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of SEGi presented the computers to YB. Chew Mei Fun, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development.

“We are grateful for the colleges' generosity to provide computers for the less fortunate orphan children,” said YB Chew. “It has been an on going project of Wanita MCA to encourage organisations and individuals to give generously in kind or in monetary to homes and charity organisations who are always in need of assistance.”

SEGi's display of charity to the children should be exemplary to all other organisations, said YB Chew.

“SEGi is more than happy to do its bit to the community,” said Lee. “Our organisation does not shy away from doing our part as a responsible corporate citizen and we are always on a look out to assist the needy where possible.”

Rockefeller once said Charity is injurious unless it helps the recipient to become independent of it.

“At SEGi, we believe in giving to needy children in non-monetary terms like computers, or scholarships. We do not discriminate if the child has extremely excellent results or poor results in their exams. If they want to study for diploma programmes or take up vocational training, we are more than willing to help by giving them scholarships to study at Systematic or PRIME. Educating them will give them a start in becoming responsible young adults. It is difficult enough for them as orphans living off charity, so we must help them gain independence and a sense of belonging in our community,” said Lee.

The Executive Director of the children's home, Reverend Roy Tan, echoed YB Chew's words of appreciation. “The two computers mean so much to the children. It will allow them to learn more about I.T. and upgrade their computer skills, whilst boosting their self-esteem and confidence,” said Rev. Tan.

Rumah KIDS was established in 1991 under Grace Community Services which has another 15 homes and shelters for the needy. Their homes care for orphaned children with food, clothing, a place to stay and education. The children's home is looking at providing music lessons for the children. They are in need of volunteer music teachers and generous donations of musical instruments.

This week from the 1 st to 3 rd July, MSC International College under the PRIME Group is organising a charity drive Art with a Heart to raise funds for old folks home and orphanages. The education group believes in instilling social awareness and responsibility in their students' education experience.
