SEGi College is sponsoring the High School Basketball League (HSBL) for young basketball players throughout Malaysia. The event is launched by YB Datuk Hoh Hee Lee, Balakong assemblyman and President of Selangor Basketball Association.

The basketball league is designed to give top-notch non-professional basketball players the chance to scratch their competitive itch.

“The goal of having the HSBL is to raise the standard of basketball among our young Malaysians. Besides, this is also a way to create a healthier society through sports,” said Lee Kok Cheng, Lee Kok Cheng, Chief Operating Officer of SEGi International Bhd and the principal of SEGi College Subang Jaya.  

Overseeing a lot of young sport talents in Malaysia, SEGi College has decided to co-partner in organising the basketball league with MVP Sport Promotion.

When asked, Lee explained, “It is our social obligation as responsible corporate citizens to contribute back to society through events such as this to promote a healthier society and to award talented youngsters.”

HSBL provides non-professional, competitive athletes with the means necessary to play and compete against other players in four different locations and venues which are Klang, Cheras, Petaling Jaya and Subang.

“We believe through basketball, we will be able to promote friendship and teamwork between players from different schools,” said Lee.

HSBL is open for registration now. 20 teams are expected to take part in the competition. Basketball players below 18 year-old are urged to take part as the competition is not only a good platform for them to perform and gain experience but to get great prizes as well.

Interesting prizes are offered to those who play well. The champion of the HSBL will receive cash prize of RM1500, SEGi Scholarship worth RM150,000, and a pair of basketball shoes, a medal and trophy. The first runner-up will receive cash prize of RM1000, SEGi Scholarship worth RM100,000, and a pair of basketball shoes, a medal and trophy, while the second runner-up will get cash prize of RM500, SEGi Scholarship worth RM 50,000, and a pair of basketball shoes, a medal and trophy.

The basketball league is expected to start-off on the 24th of March 2007. The event will see the best basketball teams from secondary schools who will pit each other every weekend in locations in the Klang Valley.

The organizers, who also manage the AND1 challenge, have side activities that will keep spectators and players interested throughout the challenge. Participants and spectators will also be judged on their dribbling, shooting, defending and spinning skills and will walk away with subsidiary titles. One should also not miss the energetic live performances of SEGi’s cheerleader team known as the Phoenix.

The grand final is scheduled to be held at the new multi-purpose hall at SEGi College flagship campus at Kota Damansara.

The new campus is located on a 10-acre site in Kota Damansara is scheduled to be up and running by mid-2007. It is in its final stages of completion. The RM100million worth campus has a capacity of 12,000 students, will be expecting to provide industry driven diploma and degree programmes to our Malaysian students.

SEGi College has for years been awarding deserving Malaysians with the opportunity to further their education. The Colleges have set up a High Achiever Scholarship (HAS) fund for top scorers for selected programmes of SEGi, as well as for the underprivileged students who work hard in their studies. The College also has sports scholarships available.

SEGi College offer programmes in areas of business, accounting, management, finance, multimedia, computer, information technology, engineering, early childhood education, creative arts and mass communication. The programmes range from certificate level to 3+0 degree programmes. Students who complete the Diploma are enrooted to the final part of the Bachelor Degree.
