SCPJ Annual Health Awareness Week a Success

Girl power! Female students of SCPJ attended the She-workshop that touched on women’s issues

16th August 2005

SEGi College Petaling Jaya (SCPJ) once again held their annual health awareness week for both students and the local community. This year, the health awareness week saw more exciting talks, workshops and activities.

The activities of the week included blood donation drive, public talks on HIV and cancer, and all female She-workshop. The She-workshop was the highlight of the week.

“She-workshop was fully-booked with 100 female student signing up for it. Although they had to pay a minimal fee for a place, the students saw the benefits of being in the workshop,” said Stephen Sesaiah, student affairs officer and Law Lecturer. “I believe the topics discussed were spot-on plus there were a lot of samples and giveaways from the sponsors and organiser.”

The workshop was very interactive touching on women’s health issues, sex, beauty and safety.

“We believe the talk on safety is vital for our female students to safeguard themselves against the ills of society today. Open the newspaper each day and you see girl, ladies and women victims of heinous crimes. The first preventive measure against it is to educate girls, young ladies and women about personal safety and defence,” adds Stephen.

The She-workshop was organised by 9 female students and Bid-direct Sdn Bhd, an events management company. All participants went home with sample products by Loreal Professional Hair Care, Giossardi, Summer’s Eve, Friend-X (a mobile portal) and Wyeth (an oral contraceptive). Each participant went home satisfied with goodies bags full of products from the sponsors plus attractive discounts on products.

Health awareness education was also high on the agenda. The College had professional speakers to talk on HIV-AIDS and cancer.

The HIV talk was open to students, staff and the general public. It was a real eye-opener for many students, who, previously, had not been well-informed about HIV and how to treat HIV-infected people.

“HIV is a deadly disease and sadly, one of the main causes of it spreading is through social ills and ignorance on the preventive measures. Also, people who are uneducated on the causes of the disease have formed a stigma toward those infected,” said Stephen. “Our purpose of having the talk is to make students and the community aware of the disease and how to deal with the HIV-positive victims. They are already victims of a deadly disease; don’t make them victims of social ignorance and prejudice.”

“SCPJ was privileged to engage Dr. Saundra from the Malaysian Cancer Society to give a free talk on various types of cancer and the preventive measures. Information on diets, exercise, preliminary precaution and how to detect the first symptoms were discussed,” said Stephen.

“We believe in providing a well rounded educational experience for our students,” added Stephen Sesaiah, student affairs officer and Law Lecturer. “Educating them on health and safety is part of the SCPJ experience. We’ve kept this event open to the local community as we believe in educating public sentiment with regards to social health and safety issues.”

“It is especially good to see students taking an active role in organising the event as it will prepare them for the corporate world when they graduate,” commented Stephen.

The blood donation drive that was open to both students and public attracted many. There were consistent droves of people coming to give blood for local hospitals and clinics.
