Easy does it! The newspaper race required calculation, speed and teamwork to reach the finishing line
“He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother!” The Backpack Game was a test of strength, endurance and communication between the ‘backpack’ and the blind-folded partner.
Orange Team Wins Championship title!! |
21st April 2008 -
There was a lull in the field as participants warmed up their muscles to prepare for the games for the day. On the blow of the whistle signaling the start of the newspaper race, shouts and cheer filled the silent field as students and lecturers rooted on their teams!
It was a sight to behold as twelve teams of ten students each made their way to the finishing line as fast as they could on two books and a newspaper. It was comical sight to see the teams frantically cramming on newspapers and books, throwing them materials as far as they can and leaping on to them, holding on for dear life as they struggled to maintain their balance.
The American Degree Program (ADP) Faculty of SEGi College Subang Jaya geld a Academic Advisors Sports Day on 29th March at the Padang Awam MPSJ. The AA Sports Day was a joint effort of lecturers and students, designed to build leadership and teamwork skills, as well as for lecturers and students to have a bit of laughter and fun before exam fever begins.
“With the excitement of the upcoming Olympics this year, it is a great opportunity for our students and staff to organize a sports day to promote unity and peace through sports. Although set is a comparatively miniature scale as to the grand Olympics, this AA Sports Day promotes positive aspect vital for a better future,” said Dr. Lisa Tan as she officiated the start of the event.
120 students and lecturers formed 12 teams that fought to be the champions of exciting games such as the Backpack Game, Obstacle Race, Longest Line and Water Balloon War. The team with the most points was declared champion at the end of the sport day and would walk away with the championship trophy.
“There must be a winning team at the end of the sports day! No guts no glory, as they call it!” added Tan as she cheered on the students for their effort. “We want our students to instill good competitive spirit!”
For the Backpack Game, teams were divided into two sides. On each side, members were blindfolded and had to carry another non-blindfolded teammate ‘piggyback’ style. The ‘seeing’ member directed the blindfolded member to the other side of the team, while having to avoid plastic bottle ‘landmines’ on the way. This went on until all team members were on opposite sides of where they started from.
The Obstacle Race was equally as exciting. Consisting of three parts- Six-Legged-Race, Smash the Watermelon, and Connect & Empty, the Obstacle Race was designed to test the cooperation, physical ability and endurance of the team members. It also provided much amusement to the spectators, watching a group of five people, whose ankles have been tied together in the Six-Legged-Race, awkwardly chasing after the other group with as much speed as they can muster. Adding to the entertainment, some lecturers cheekily tried to sabotage other groups, in the name of fun and competitive spirit.

Although the weather was blazingly hot throughout the event, it was not enough to dry up the high morale and enthusiasm of every team. The sun’s heat was cooled down as the event ended with the Water Balloon War, in which the AA Sports Day committee members and lecturers pelted each other with water balloons, and the last remaining person who managed to stay dry earned bonus points for his or her team.
The champions were the Orange team, led by Mrs. Chaw, while first runner-up went to the Purple team, led by Mr. Chong. However, no one was sore at not winning, as they have tried their very best, had great fun and gained many fond memories to look back upon the AA Sports Day.
