SEGi College hosted a workshop by the Team Principal of Red Bull F1 Racing, Christian Horner, on the subject of “Understanding Formula 1 Racing”. The event was organised by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), which is SEGi’s professional & training partner.

More than 150 students and motoring enthusiasts from SEGi College and members of renowned automobile organizations packed the event hall. Also present at the talk was Martin Austin, Chairman of IMI and Lee Kok Cheng, Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director of SEG International Bhd.

Horner’s talk was focused on the introduction of current, future technologies and the highlights of the Formula 1 Grand Prix.

“It is a great honour to have Christian Horner to be our guest speaker. Having him to have a workshop with our students is a golden opportunity for our students to learn more about the F1 and automotive industry,” said Lee.

At just 33, Red Bull F1 Racing’s Team Principal is almost 20 years younger than any of his fellow team principals. It is a rapid rise to success, holding top jobs in international motorsports, for the man from Leamington Spa in England.

In December last year, the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) awarded SEGi as an Approved Assessment Centre for IMI in providing quality programmes in line with industry needs. As an education institution that values industry-driven programmes, the workshop was targeted for students to gain insights of the prime area of the motor industry, the Formula 1.

“This is a rare opportunity for our students and trainees, particularly those pursuing mechanical and automotive engineering, to have an insight into working with one of the very best teams in motorsports. They will be exposed to leading edge engineering and mechanics, and we hope this will inspire them to aim high and settle for nothing but the very best,” said Lee.

“The talk by Mr. Horner has also aroused much enthusiasm among our automotive vocational trainees,” Lee added.

SEGi College for years has produced more than 200 First Class Honours graduates in engineering. The College in Subang Jaya is particularly popular for engineering programmes.

With the motto: Passion Guided, Industry Driven, SEGi College has been trying to provide industry driven programmes that make its students career-ready.

The talk by Christian Horner further cements the working relationship between Red Bull F1 Racing, IMI and SEGi College. There are already talks to make next year’s event even bigger and better.

“SEGi College is committed to preparing industry driven programmes and career-ready graduates in demand by the industry. SEGi’s students in the campuses nationwide would experience and benefit from the industry driven programmes and workshops in order for them to gain experience and knowledge,” said Lee.
