Milking Knowledge Through Educational Tours
Tan first began this educational tour project in August when she took a group of 40 students to OCE Malaysia Sdn Bhd to cover areas of Branding, Internal Analysis and Technology Based Systems. The group comprised of Marketing, Business and Information Technology students. “It was a fruitful trip as both lecturers and students who attended the trip had benefited in understanding the strategies applied by a reputable company such as OCE. Similarly the students were given assignments for which marks were contributed as part of their overall assessment in the relevant subjects they were studying,” said Tan. Tan further added, “Trips are just a part of our planning in moving towards industry driven. The various modes of assessing the students would also be planning Management Games, Industry Driven Speakers, Market Survey to equip our students in better understanding the subjects taught. Exposing them to such assessments helps build their learning environment to one that is away from boredom and traditional assessment methods, which they already know from their school days.” SEGi College Petaling Jaya has a different way of educating students whereby every semester, there will be a subject that will be decided for students to carry out the assessment. “Lecturers are also briefed on this and are part and parcel of this excursion. Through their academic background, they would have a better insight on how the assessment should be designed like bringing the experience gained and blending it with the academic theories which are relevant,” added Tan. The educational tours are in line with the College's vision mission of Passion Guided, Industry Driven. The redesign of SEGi's vision mission is to cater to the pressure of a global economy that demands knowledge-workers.
