SEGi College, Malaysia recently played host to a special talk by distinguished guest Professor John Yates, Head of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Sheffield. The talk entitled “Faster, Larger, Better: How engineers push the boundaries” is a rare chance for students and the public to deepen their knowledge and insights to the latest technologies and development in mechanical engineering.

“Apart from our twinning programmes offered locally in partnership with Sheffield, this event among others demonstrates the good relations we have established with our esteemed partner. Known as one of the most renowned university in the United Kingdom, it is indeed a rare occasion to have speakers flown all the way just to give their insights and share their experience with our students,” said Dr. Tan  Beng Cheok, Senior Vice President (Academic) of SEGi Group.

“Today, Professor John Yates and his associates are here specially to enlighten student about the world of mechanical engineering. His talk will provide the feel and imperative knowledge for students taking the programme and also for students contemplating the course,” added Dr. Tan.

“Faster, Larger, Better: How Engineers Push The Boundaries” provides invaluable insights into some of the recent technical advances made by engineers that will lead to increased performance in a wide lead to increase performance in a wide range of machines which include aircraft and race cars.

“We are definitely grateful for time and cooperation that we have received from Sheffield. Our partnership and especially the talk today demonstrate Sheffield’s trust in SEGi’s ability to deliver engineering programmes of international recognition and standard,” added Dr. Tan.

“We hope to be able to organise event such as this more frequently in the years to come. It will provide the golden opportunity for our students to ask questions directly to the professionals in the field and also to clear doubts they might have regarding studies in the UK,” explained Dr. Tan.

As partners of the highly esteemed University, SEGi College offers the 1+2 twinning programmes from Sheffield in 3 engineering disciplines of BEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering, BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering.

Dr. Tan added, “The twinning programme allows students to study the industry driven, Sheffield engineering degree 1st year at SEGi. The pre-requisites of the twinning programme are with either A-levels or equivalent, or articulation with a SEGi engineering diploma. Acceptance into the SEGi diploma programme, students must have at least 5 credits in SPM.”

UK university guides confirm the University of Sheffield’s position as one of the powerhouses of British higher education. The Virgin 2007 Alternative Guide to British Universities findings indicated that “Sheffield is a top university across the board”. The University is rated 8th in the UK, 21st in Europe, and 72nd in the world in an annual academic ranking of the top 500 universities worldwide published in August 2007 by China's Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The University has also won numerous Queen’s Anniversary Prizes in 2002, 2000 and 1998.

The University of Sheffield has more than 24,000 students from 118 countries, and almost 6000 staff. Sheffield’s research partners and clients include Boeing, Rolls Royce, Unilever, Boots, AstraZeneca, GSK, ICI and Slazenger.

The Sheffield academic partners include leading universities around the world. International partnerships include Worldwide Universities Network (USA, Europe and China) and our partnership with Leeds and York Universities (the White Rose Consortium) has combined research power greater than that of either Oxford or Cambridge.

The SEGi Diploma in Chemical Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering are recognised by the National Accreditation Board (LAN) and the Ministry of Higher Education.

“The secret behind producing more than 300 First Class Honours graduates lies with our industry-experienced teaching staff and the dedicated learning facilities for our engineering programmes. As practised in Sheffield, we bring to students world-class teaching quality in all disciplines,” Dr. Tan elaborated.

“SEGi’s passion in education is driven by industry-link universities and programmes. We are focused on providing our students with contemporary education that benefits them by making them career ready,” said Dr. Tan. “Therefore, we ensure that our partners also share this passion to be industry driven yet maintaining excellence in education.”
