2 Sept 2008 - According to Dato’ Badlisham Ghazali, CEO of the Multimedia Development Corporation Sdn Bhd (MDeC) in the magazine Graduan 2008, there will be at least 100,000 IT jobs by 2010, especially in creative multimedia, shared services and outsourcing services.
HR directors of a few major IT companies concur that there is a shortage for skilled IT workers, but IT graduates need to buck up on a few areas. Apart from good academic qualifications, they also need interpersonal skills, team spirit, time management and other soft skills. A decent command of English and industry-relevant qualifications are also necessary in order to be hire-worthy.
To fill this niche, Kolej SEGi Seri Kembangan in Kuala Lumpur has started a Diploma in Multimedia programme. This 3-year programme is designed to make its diploma graduates highly competitive for the local IT workforce.

Kolej SEGi Seri Kembangan empathizes with the current economic situation, so it has ensured that its Diploma in Multimedia students receive full funding by the PTPTN for tuition fees (Yuran Pengajian).
The PTPTN loan also includes provision of a RM100 montly allowance (Elaun Saradiri) for 36 months. The college provides hostel accomodation to outstation students free of charge. During registration, students need to pay only RM340.
The Diploma in Multimedia is designed to ensure that students have a good balance of theory and practical so that they are prepared for the job market. Throughout their course of study, students are exposed to demonstrations, simulations, laboratory and studio work.
The syllabus emphasizes on combining multimedia with animation, photography, graphics design and media productions elements. The students will also undergo Industrial Training for two months at leading creative multimedia related organizations before completing studies.
The Diploma will be taught in Bahasa Malaysia to ease understanding of the programme, but will have English classes validated by an international qualification body (based in the United Kingdom) to equip the graduates with recognised English qualifications.
After completing this diploma, students have the option of upgrading with full pathways to a degree at SEGi University College in Kota Damansara, Selangor. Apart from that, they are privileged to attend a leadership camp at SEGi Leadership Centre. This camp provides highly valued exercises that increase students soft skills and help with personal development.
They will experience competitive group games, do rock-climbing, flying fox and other exciting outdoor activities. This extra benefit for SEGi students is in line with current employers’ needs for workers with qualities such as communication skills, good team players, confidence in handling challenges and leadership skills.
Job prospects available for this qualification vary from technical to supervisory and managerial positions in multimedia design, creative design, animation studio, production house, advertising agency, media firms (printing, electronic and web) as well as MSC-based organizations.
