Lion Dance Roars Success for SEGi

Chinese New Year celebration with a bang! The thrilling lion dance that captivated and amused students and staff.

8th February 2006

Ushering in the lunar new year was the Lion Dance held at SEGi College Subang Jaya to mark the start to a year of possibilities, prosperity and excellence for its students and staff.

The morning was full of merriment as over 300 students and staff crowded in to the College's lobby to witness the delightful prance of the lions as well as breathtaking stunts as the lions leaped from pole to pole, a performance beautifully coordinated by the Persatuan Tinju Wing Choon. Brilliantly garbed in yellow, orange and red, the lion dancers brought smiles and laughter to the crowd as it skilfully jumped to reach for the ‘sang choy' and ‘ang pau'.

“Chinese New Year is always a big celebration at the College as we wish for blessings for our students to excel in their education and their future endeavors, as well as for the College to develop and expand in quality education,” said Lee Kok Cheng, Principal of SEGi College Subang Jaya.

“This year the celebration was doubled with as we have successfully moved into our new Subang Jaya campus and starting afresh with a new name of SEGi College after our merger,” enthused Lee. “We hope our double milestones would bring forth double the prosperity and double the luck.”

SEGi College Subang Jaya was formed after the merger of PRIME College , MSC International College and Summit College .

International students from China felt very much at home watching the antics of the lion dances, and the other students from Pakistan and Indonesia were enthusiastic of the performance.

“Our international students simply enjoy being part of the many traditions and cultures we have here in Malaysia , and the lion dance is truly as spectacular way to show them the Chinese tradition,” said Lee.

For Chen Fei, a student pursuing a programme in early childhood education, from Shanghai , it was a reminder of the celebration of the Lunar New Year celebrations at her home country. “I did not go back to Shanghai this year but would be celebrating it here with my friends. For me, it's as good a celebration here in Malaysia. It's like home away from home!” Chen exclaimed.

When approached, Tan Ai Gee, a final year business degree student, didn't want to miss the opportunity to see the lion dance performance. When my friends and I saw the notice at the college about the Lunar celebrations, we simply had to come. “The gathering among lecturers and friends after the lion dance performance for lunch makes it more meaningful. To an extent, it has become an annual tradition at SEGi,” Tan added.

For every festive season, the College is colourfully decorated for Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Deepavali to set the atmosphere and mood for the season's celebration.

After the lion dance, students and staff were treated with mandarin oranges and festive goodies.
