The anticipation of Christmas for most of us are what presents we are going to receive this year. For the students of SEGi College, Kuala Lumpur (formerly known as Systematic College, Kuala Lumpur) what was running through their thoughts were not the latest iPod or the 3G mobile handphone they hope to get, but what they could each do to bring joy to the less fortunate.

Ivan Ong, president of the student council, lead his fellow college-mates on a week long fund raising and charity drive for the Rumah Hope Orphanage. They organised Christmas cookies sale and gathered toys that are new or old (but clean and still in good condition) for the children.

“I believe it was difficult for some of them to part with their toys. But as they are now matured individuals with a sense of purpose, parting with their childhood playthings was a noble and goodwill act as it made them feel kindly to help the unfortunate,” added Ngu.

The charity drive raised RM705 plus toys for the Rumah Hope Orphanage which was welcomed with appreciation. The college students visited the orphanage prior to Christmas to present the children with the toys and also to spend a day of fun singing carols and playing games with the children.

“The orphaned children had a good time and so did the students. It warms the heart to spread a joy this season and I am sure that the children are happy to be thought about during this festival. The star of this event is seeing the smiling faces of the children of Rumah Hope,” said Ngu.

The College is planning to have more activities for charities for 2006. They believe that charity should not be thought about only during festivals but throughout the year.
