SEGi Expands into Medical and Healthcare Courses

Datuk Clement Hii…SEGi moving into healthcare & allied science courses.

SEGi Group of Colleges is stepping up its programme offerings in allied health and medical sciences, which it describes as “niche and critical courses”.

Datuk Clement Hii, Group Chief Executive Officer of SEGi said his institutions are responding to the growing need for medical and healthcare professionals and services in Malaysia and globally.

“We will capture a sizable market as the demand for such courses is rapidly on the rise, although huge investments are required for equipment, facilities and human resources,” he pointed out.

SEGi has obtained approval to offer the Master of Pharmacy in collaboration with the University of Sunderland, UK, under a 2 + 2 arrangement. The programme, which underwent a tough accreditation process, is also recognised by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.

SEGi is also moving into training of nurses in a big way. The Nursing Board of Malaysia recently saw it fit to give the Group the “Emerging Star” award. SEGi’s colleges are expected to have a “substantial population” of nursing students by this year.

Hii said substantial investments have been made to outfit SEGi College Malaysia, the flagship campus at Kota Damansara, with the equipment and technology needed for the allied health sciences programmes. The facilities and equipment are also being upgraded at the other SEGi campuses.

“In terms of strength, everything is in place as SEGi has the right infrastructure and manpower to support the new courses,” Hii added. SEGi currently has a staff strength of about 1200, including 300 part-time staff members.

The allied health sciences programmes in the pipeline are on healthcare, environmental health, medical laboratory technology, and physiotherapy.

SEGi is also currently working to offer at its main campus the medical degree programme in collaboration with Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), Indonesia. The Group is also working simultaneously in getting the relevant approvals for UNAIR’s dentistry degree programme.

“We have already spent more than RM15mil on the equipment and other requirements, and are prepared to invest more to ensure that teaching and training quality is not compromised,” Hii pointed out.

He added that the large capital expenditures constitute “a high barrier to entry” for new providers, and would therefore allow SEGi a headstart over the other private colleges in this niche market.
