16 September 2008 - The Faculty of Creative Arts & Design (FOCAD) at SEGi College Subang Jaya (SCSJ) was set up with the aim of being the premier centre for media, art and design education in Malaysia. It has since then lived up to its expectations and more.

The success of the Faculty and its programs are partly due to Mr Roslan bin Othman’s (Head of Faculty) vision and its lecturers’ commitment.

“FOCAD focusses on producing students who strive on creative excellence.  The lecturers here are committed to training students to have excellent interpersonal skills to prepare them to take on challenges of the industry in the working world,” said Encik Roslan bin Othman, Head of FOCAD at SCSJ.

“We regularly create avenues for our students to use their imagination in the most creative and functional manner. With this, we will ensure that our students are at the forefront of creative arts and design in the years to come,“ he added.

FOCAD offers diploma programs in music, advertising design, creative multimedia, graphic design, interior design, video and animation, photography and mass communication. The Diploma in Creative Multimedia, Diploma in Graphic Design, Diploma in Advertising Design and Diploma in Video & Animation have MSC Status.

The success of the FOCAD programs can be seen in the demand for its students. Most of these students are already hired by the companies they are attached to even before they graduate.

FOCAD has a Career Exploratory Program which arranges industrial training placement for its students with top-notch companies. Among the companies are Leo Burnett Advertising, Bozell Worldwide Sdn Bhd, Astro Productions Sdn Bhd, Malaysia Airlines and all the way to Australia in Oriental Post, Perth. Akitek Supra has been consistently requesting for trainees from FOCAD SCSJ every semester.

The Faculty also arranges for Industry Excursions so that its students have enough exposure to a wide range of fields. Some of the companies they have visited are SIRIM, Jotun, Karangkraf, Robert Bosch and Media Prima (8TV).

FOCAD constantly strives to value-add the diploma programs for its students. One of it is by providing the best facilities to optimise learning in creative arts and design.

It has a Certified Autodesk Training Centre (AutoCAD) based in the campus. There are currently only five of such centres in the country. FOCAD also has an Authorized Training Centre for InteriCAD software by ES Exim Sdn Bhd.

It recently added a blue screen studio and green screen studio which cater for movie and video special effects, camera work and sound recording. Apart from that, the campus is equipped with graphic and multimedia laboratories, creative arts gallery, photography dark rooms and studios, CAD laboratories, techinal drafting room, power tools workshop and machinery workshop, performing arts theatre and music rooms.

The SCSJ campus also has video editing rooms, online e-library system, internet facilities, reading rooms, hotspot wireless access, counseling rooms, student lounge, games room, cafeteria and surau. A SEGi-3K Sports Partnership provides students access to sports facilities at the 3K Sports Complex a stone’s throw away from campus.

A unique feature of FOCAD is its Close Monitoring System, which assigns lecturers with small groups of students to monitor students’ academic progress. This mentor-mentee program has regular meets with students’ parents who have shown very good response to it.

“A few of the latest avenues FOCAD created for students to express their creativity and skills are SCSJ.fm Radio, MiSi and MAD Showcase,“ enthused Roslan.

Media, Art & Design (MAD) Showcase 2008, which will be held from 11th to 13th of October this year, at SCSJ allows FOCAD’s graduates to display their work and be interviewed by corporations looking for potential employees.

MiSi is a theatre performance from 13th to 15th October by its Performing Arts students, directed by Mr Anderson Ee. Entrance to watch the play is free. SCSJ.fm Radio was created for Mass Communication students to practise being deejays.

Both students and lecturers at FOCAD are accomplished individuals in the creative arts & design industry. Encik Roslan, Head of Faculty, is to be honored as one of the panel jury for ‘Inventions, Innovations & Designs Award 2008. Encik Saiful Bahar and Azizi Ahmad are also to be honored as panel juries for other significant competitions.

Mr Yii Kah Hoe, Music Lecturer, has a long list of international and national musical performances to his name. He is also internationally recognised as a composer and musician. Four of FOCAD’s graduates are also recognised Malaysian composers.
Among the many other achievements by FOCAD and its students are Gold Award Winner of the Florida Film Festival 2005, winner of the United Nations Poster Design Competition 2004 & 2005 and winner of Astro Chinese Short Film Award in 2002, 2003, 2004 & 2005.

Apart from all these activities and involvement in external projects and competitions, FOCAD students have the chance to experience leadership training and character building at the SEGi Leadership Centre, where they undergo a range of outdoor activities such as wall-climbing, canoeing, flying fox and team games.

The duration of study for the diploma programs, which are approved by Ministry of Higher Education and Malaysian Qualifications Agency, last two and a half years. Minimum entry requirement is 3 credits in SPM or equivalent.

Full pathway is provided into a degree with Waikato University in New Zealand, the University of Southern Queensland in Australia and University of Teesside in the UK.
