One word sums up ‘Realising Every Dream Charity Night 2010’ organized by KURAL (Indian Cultural Society of SEGi University College) on 23 January: A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. The incredibly exciting line-up of events kept the packed hall of guests continuously entertained from 7pm right up to 12am.

The Charity Night is a noble project indeed. KURAL members took it upon themselves to organise a massive concert to raise funds for this Home, which has 2 centres run by only 6 volunteers.

Proceeds of the ticket sales went to the Agathians Shelter Home, an orphanage for boys that was founded in 2003 by a team of young adults to prevent a group of children from being turned onto the streets.

The children at the Home are from various backgrounds; some are orphans, some are from single parent families who can’t afford to feed them while others are abandoned, abused or neglected. Agathians Shelther Home accepts any child from any race and religion. It is not affiliated to any religious movement.

It took the event organizers a lot of effort to make it a great success. They managed to get sponsorship from SEGi University College, Shriez Events, Padang Kota Corner, Gajah Gas System (M) Sdn Bhd, Memoirs Bridal Gallery, Sri Muda Sweets Savouries and Florist and Bintang Sidewalk Café.

They were also able to obtain personal contributions from many generous guests such as Mr T. Mohan (MIC Youth Leader), Dato’ Subramaniam, Dato’ Dr. Nasir and a long list of other prominent people.

Guests from different SEGi campuses as well as non-student guests poured in by 6.30pm until there were not enough seats in the Multipurpose Hall. The event opened with a slide presentation and a heart-thumping traditional drum performance, followed by an impressive traditional Indian dance featuring a peacock.

Then, there were dancing and singing one after another by 12 groups of SEGi student performers, 2 of which are from SEGi College Kuala Lumpur and the rest from SEGi University College. The choreography of the dances was as good as professional performances with elaborate group formations, based on fast-beat Tamil music.

A group of Agathian Shelther Home children were very cute when they did their breakdance number. KURAL event organisers were so resourceful that they managed to get heart-throb VZec, a famous local Tamil singer, to croon his top hits for the fan-crazy young ladies in the hall.

They also invited upcoming local Tamil hip hop groups to do their thing. Some of them such as Thug Face Group are pretty good. A group of student from Masterskill College supported the charity effort by buying tickets and performing a dance. Not to forget an incredibly hilarious sketch put up by the 2 very comical emcees and other KURAL members.

All in all there were up to 27 groups performing until the stroke of midnight. The Charity Night was professionally run, the hall was well decorated and the audience was kept on their toes throughout the solid 5 hours.

Well done, KURAL!
