Our planet is an ever changing environment and, with the consumption of natural resources by mankind at such a staggering rate, scientists and engineers have begun researching into more advanced means of caring for the environment.
Preserving the environment for the well-being of all living organisms is crucial and environmental knowledge is undoubtedly an essential component in any kind of development.
This is where SEGi has stepped in, with the timely launch of their new Master of Environmental Management Technology programme, which was held at their University College campus in Kota Damansara today.
The Master of Environmental Management Technology is offered at SEGi’s Kota Damansara campus under the School of The Built Environment and can be completed in 1 year and 4 months when studied full-time, or as little as 2 years part-time.
The programme aims to address the ever growing demand for highly specialised and effectively trained managers and scientists to tackle significant environmental issues in today’s natural environment, agro-environmental issues and land use functions.
Students will be introduced to a wide range of environmental issues and threats the world is facing now and, upon graduation, graduates will be skilled and knowledgeable in all environmental aspects while being able to develop creative solutions for environmental problems.
In his welcome address during the launch ceremony, SEGi University College Vice Chancellor Emeritus Professor Dr. Muhamad Awang said “It is too late for people to sit back and ignore the current changes in our precious environment. It has come to the stage where every individual need to play an active role to ensure that the environment is preserved for this and future generations. If we do not build awareness within our communities and take care of our own environment, what will this teach our future generations?”
Apart from the Master of Environmental Management Technology programme, the SEGi University College School of The Built Environment also offers the Bachelor of Environmental Technology (Hons), BSs (Hons) Construction Management, BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering, Diploma in Civil Engineering and Diploma in Construction Management.
In conjunction with the launch of the Master of Environmental Management Technology, SEGi University College proudly hosted Professor Dr. Nigel Bell all the way from Imperial College London to deliver a talk entitled ‘Ecological Lessons from the Chernobyl and Fukushima Accidents’.
Dr Bell, who is very knowledgeable in the field, boasts years of experience as Professor of Environmental Pollution and Director of the MSc in Environmental Technology at Imperial College London, where he has worked since 1970.
Dr Bell has also gained very relevant experience in the related talk topic as the UK representative on the Chernobyl International Radioecology Laboratory, which has involved him visiting the contaminated area in the Ukraine.
Dr Bell captivated the crowd of nearly 300 with detailed information on the effects of the accident in Chernobyl. He also covered both the scientific and political aspects of the Chernobyl and Fukushima accidents, with conclusions as to the lesions to be learned for any future accidents.
