CIM originated in 1911 and went through several name changes before being known as CIM in 1989. The only professional marketing body to hold a Royal Charter, it is the largest marketing association in the world today, with 60,000 members and student members worldwide.

Their candidates are supported in some 400 branches (study centers) around the world.

CIM is unique in awarding the Chartered Marketer status, in recognition of achievement in theory, practical experience and expertise. CIM's Diploma was awarded graduate status in 1995, enabling more students to continue their studies to the Master's level. Holders of the Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing can be admitted directly into many Bachelor's and Master's degree courses.
