Life science, also referred to as the biological sciences, is the scientific study of life or living things. Life science as a discipline classifies living organisms, past and present, and examines how they come into existence, how they function, and the interactions they have with each other and their natural environment.
Most biological sciences are specialized disciplines. Traditionally, they are grouped by the type of organism being studied: botany, the study of plants; zoology, the study of animals; and microbiology, the study of microorganisms. The fields within biology are further divided based on the scale at which organisms are studied and the methods used to study them: biochemistry examines the fundamental chemistry of life; molecular biology studies the complex interactions of systems of biological molecules; cellular biology examines the basic building block of all life, the cell; physiology examines the physical and chemical functions of the tissues and organ systems of an organism; and ecology examines how various organisms and their environment interrelate.
Students will be introduced to the scientific method, a series of techniques for acquiring new knowledge and correcting previous knowledge through observation, experimentation, and the formulation and testing of hypotheses. This will be introduced and taught through a wide variety of courses in their diploma programme.
Students in this diploma programme are given a wide range of choices to study basic sciences, i.e., Biology, Biochemistry, Biodiversity, Biotechnology, Evolution, Genetics, Microbiology, Molecular and Cell Biology and Physiology. The diploma structure is wide and flexible, and is appropriate for students with a wide interest in the areas of biological sciences. The diploma programme aims to develop a lifelong interest in life science (namely, biological sciences and human sciences) through provision of a wide range of courses. This programme provides for both students who wish to use it to further pursue a degree into areas of Biology, Biomedical Science and Biotechnology, or who decide to terminate their study after completing the diploma. |
