This BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering degree programme
is one of a suite of three distinctive engineering courses at
Sunderland. The other two are Automotive Engineering and
Electronics and Electrical.
The programmes are based on a complete set of open learning
materials unique to Sunderland. This means that students
can study this course away from Sunderland at Overseas or
UK Centres. The special features of the learning materials are
that students can work through them in their own time, with
lots of in-text questions, answers and self assessment tests.
This is backed up by tutor support either at the Centres or the
university.
The course material in Mechanical Engineering has been designed
to meet the high quality standards required for the engineering
profession. Subjects included in the syllabus cover, for example,
Engineering design; Dynamics; Structures; Engineering materials
selection; Modern manufacturing systems; Measurement and
instrumentation; Control; Project management.

The programmes have all been designed to meet the academic
requirements of the Institution of Engineering and Technology
(IET) for IEng status as an Incorporated Engineer. They are in the
process of submission to that organisation for approval.
